Ireland manager Mick McCarthy is hoping that a scan on Jason McAteer’s injured knee reveals nothing more than bruising.

Sunderland midfielder McAteer was taken to hospital for a scan after a reckless tackle during Ireland’s 2-1 win over Sanfrecce Hiroshima today which at first left McCarthy fearing his player had suffered medial ligament damage.
