Becks shows foot is on mend

England supporters will be relieved today after footballer David Beckham was spotted strolling, proving his broken foot is well and truly on the mend.

The national team captain was reported to be on a night out with wife Victoria in London when he was seen walking to a restaurant.

England bosses and fans are all praying that he will be match fit in time for the World Cup game against Sweden on June 2.

There were fears he would not be able to play after he broke a metatarsal bone in his left foot in a crunching tackle by Argentine defender Aldo Duscher during Manchester United’s Champions League quarter final clash with Spanish side Deportivo La Coruna on April 10.

Doctors said the injury would put the midfielder out of action for six to eight weeks, just seven and a half weeks before England’s World Cup opener.

But the sight of the player out and about this weekend will help to allay any fears that he will not be back in action in time.

Rather than relying on crutches to get around with his foot in plaster, Beckham held Victoria’s hand as he strolled along.

And while his left foot was reported to be supported by a red brace hidden by his jeans, there was no plaster cast and he wore only a sock over the injured foot.

He was reported to be walking with only a slight limp.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson told The Daily Mirror: ‘‘We think he will be 100% to play in the World Cup.

‘‘He’s not quite there but in 10 days he will be okay.’’

Beckham has put his rapid recovery down to swimming and weight work.
