Amoruso scoops players’ award

Rangers defender Lorenzo Amoruso was honoured by his fellow professionals last night when he was handed the Scottish Professional Football Association’s Player of the Year award.

The prize will give the Italian a huge boost ahead of Saturday’s Scottish Cup final against Celtic.

Aberdeen starlet Kevin McNaughton was named Young Player of the Year and veteran striker Owen Coyle picked up the First Division award, despite now being out of contract along with the rest of his Airdrie team-mates.

Other awards went to Queen of the South’s John O’Neil for the Second Division and East Fife striker Paul McManus was voted Third Division Player of the Year.

But one of the biggest cheers of the night went to former Celtic legend Jimmy Johnstone, who received a special merit award.
