Zinedine Zidane and Steve McMananman put Real Madrid CF on course for the UEFA Champions League final after the first leg of their semi-final against FC Barcelona.

Madrid won 2-0 at Camp Nou tonight, their first victory in the famous stadium for 19 years, after soaking up plenty of Barcelona pressure, particularly in the first half. Zidane's goal came in the 55th minute, after a defence-splitting pass from Claude Makelele.

The French international held off a challenge from Philip Cocu and, with goalkeeper Roberto Bonano rushing out to narrow the angle, chipped the ball over his head. Bonano managed to get his fingertips to the ball but could not stop it falling into the net.

McManaman, on as a second-half substitute, sealed the win with a goal two minutes into injury time. With virtually the last kick of the match, the Englishman found himself in space on the right of the penalty area and he lofted the ball over Bonano into the far corner.
