Bar workers strike may happen during World Cup

Bar workers from the MANDATE trade union have threatened to go on strike during the World Cup after accusing the Licensed Vintners Association of withdrawing its recognition of the union.

The threat was issued at MANDATE’s bi-annual conference in Tralee, Co Kerry, today.

Union spokesman Gerard Nash said: "Nobody wants to go out and take industrial action - it affects our members as well as everybody else - but they might not have any other option.

"There is a lot of anger out there and members say they are being treated with contempt. They have a right to join a trade union and then to be represented by that union."

MANDATE represents around 3,000 bar workers in Dublin.
