Premiership: Carroll stops Leicester taking lead

Leicester 0 Man Utd 0 (half-time)

Manchester United goalkeeper Roy Carroll denied Leicester the lead at Filbert Street with a couple of fine stops.

Carroll, who replaced the rested Fabien Barthez, saved well from Brian Deane and Paul Dickov before the latter fired over from a good chance.

Savage was somewhat fortunate to escape a booking for a lunge at Irwin, although referee Andy D’Urso gave a free-kick.

After nearly hitting the executive boxes with his first shot, Scholes did better with his next effort which was saved by Walker.

But on the whole it was Leicester doing most of the attacking. Piper was presented with a good chance when he dispossessed Mikael Silvestre, only for the Foxes winger to waste his cross.

United then produced their best move of the match when Forlan shrugged off a couple of challenges to play a one-two with Solskjaer before finding Scholes, who drove just over the top of the Leicester bar.

The match needed a goal, but instead of finding the back of the net from a decent chance, Nicky Butt screwed his shot wide.

Phil Neville became the first player to be booked for a challenge on Oakes on the edge of the centre circle, which did not go down well with Ferguson.

Dickov should have worsened the United manager’s mood when he missed the best chance yet to open the scoring from the free-kick.

Oakes floated the ball to the right where Gary Rowett nodded it on for Dickov to knock his shot just over the bar.

The little Scottish striker held his head in his hands and he knew he should have done better.
