Soccer: Young new Aberdeen skipper

Aberdeen manager Ebbe Skovdahl has appointed Darren Young as the new club captain.

He replaces Derek Whyte, whose contract is set to expire in the summer with no agreement having yet been reached on a new deal.

Skovdahl picked the 23-year-old ahead of experienced collegues Roberto Bisconti and Peter Kjaer because he wanted a Scot to lead the team.

He said: ‘‘Darren has earned the job. I think it is important to pick a Scottish player. It helps keep the club’s Scottish identity.’’ end
