Tottenham crashed to their fourth defeat on the trot as Chris Powell gave Charlton their derby dozen with his first league goal for the club at White Hart Lane.

Glenn Hoddle's men were denied by a string of sensational saves by Ireland international Dean Kiely.

And Powell struck in the 70th minute to ensure Charlton's amazing unbeaten run against capital opposition stretched to 12 games.

Richard Rufus returned for Charlton, playing his first match since suffering serious knee ligament damage in August.

The game started at a hectic pace, with Spurs' Simon Davies making a powerful forward surge in the opening 20 seconds and Luke Young delivering a threatening cross at the other end.

The initial fizz quickly drained out of this match, with Spurs appearing somewhat disjointed.

Rufus almost made a goalscoring return in the 25th minute, but his towering header from Chris Bart-Williams' corner flashed wide of Neil Sullivan's left-hand post.

Kiely then made his sensational fingertip save.

Ziege looped over a curling cross from the left flank and Ferdinand stooped to head the ball powerfully goalwards from just seven yards out.

Kiely stretched out his right hand and got just enough contact to deflect the ball away from his net.

Hoddle withdrew Ferdinand at half-time, replacing him with Steffen Iversen .

Charlton then took a shock lead.

Graham Stuart crossed from the right, and as the ball looped over Euell, Ledley King made a hash of his clearance and Powell stole in to bundle the ball home.

Tottenham fought back and the visitors had to cling on by the skin of their teeth with two minutes left.

Poyet came closest when his header from Ziege's corner was headed onto the underside of the crossbar by substitute Paul Konchesky - who then cleared the rebound
