FA Cup: West Brom shade victory
West Brom 1 Cheltenham 0
Third Division Cheltenham gave West Brom a run for their money in their FA Cup fifth round tie at the Hawthorns but a second half strike by Daniel Dichio was the difference between the sides and West Brom progress to the quarter finals.
The only goal of the game came in the 64th minute when Valis sent over a dangerous cross from the right flank and Dichio sent an unstoppable header past Book.
West Brom attacked from the off and McInnes let his frustration get the better of him when he was yellow carded in the 34th minute for a late challenge on Howells in the centre circle.
But Cheltenham created an opportunity in the 37th minute when the ball fell to Naylor inside the penalty area but he totally mis-kicked and Phil Gilchrist was able to clear.
Then Naylor turned on the left and sent over a dangerous cross which was cut out by Hoult.
Albion created their best chance of the first half in the 43rd minute when Roberts played the ball into the path of Adam Chambers but he shot weakly at Brook.
Albion dominated the opening stages of the second period as they went for the kill with a non-stop barrage of pressure.
Duff did well to prevent an intended pass for Johnson by Roberts and then Book came off his line to save at the feet of Phil Gilchrist after a shot from Roberts had been deflected into his path.
Albion then had penalty claims rejected after a challenge by Yates on Chambers following good play by Roberts.
Then Book saved a low effort from Johnson away to his left but Cheltenham continued to defend gamely.
Cheltenham came close to taking a shock lead after 56 minutes when a header from Victory was cleared off the line by Chambers following a corner by Milton.
Book then did well to beat away a close-range effort from Roberts who had burst into the Cheltenham penalty area but after 64 minutes Cheltenham’s gallant resistance was finally broken by Dichio.
Cheltenham then threw everything at West Brom but to no avail as West Brom advanced.
