African Nations: Nigeria beat Liberia to reach quarter-finals

Nigeria are through to the quarter-finals of the African Nations Cup after beating Liberia 1-0.

Shaktar Donetsk striker Julius Aghahowa headed the winner from Finidi George's corner.

The Ipswich player had earlier missed a penalty.

The game was likely to be the last international appearance of Liberia's George Weah.

The former Fifa player of the year has said he will probably retire from international football after Mali 2002.

Nigeria won Group A with seven points and will meet the Group B runners-up in the quarter-finals.

Nigeria started strongly but Liberia goalkeeper Louis Crayton denied the Super Eagles their best chance of the first half by saving George's weak spot-kick.

But Aghahowa settled the game when he rose unmarked to head home from a corner.
