Soccer: League discusses Celtic, Rangers inclusion
The Football League have admitted they are discussing the prospect of Celtic and Rangers joining next season’s Worthington Cup.
The Premier League recently closed the door on the Old Firm duo playing in the top flight of the English game.
But Football League chairman Keith Harris last night admitted the League are seriously considering the prospect of the pair taking part in their cup competition next season.
He said: ‘‘I do find the concept of Rangers and Celtic entering the Worthington Cup one that would fill most of us with enthusiasm.
‘‘They are brilliantly supported teams and the notion of a major English team and Scottish team clashing always attracts interest and it would be appealing for television.’’
Asked if was feasible that the Glasgow duo could be competing in the Worthington Cup, Harris said: ‘‘Yes, it could.’’
But he was keen to point out that no invitation will be made until the implications for teams north and south of the border have been considered.
