Premiership: Staunton hopes to stay at Villa

Steve Staunton has spelt out his desire to stay with Aston Villa for the remainder of his career and he is hoping he will be offered a new contract.

Staunton signed a two-and-a-half-year deal when he returned to Villa from Liverpool 12 months ago.

The Republic Of Ireland international has been in fine form during the current campaign and is looking to end his playing days with the Midlands club.

He said: ‘‘I’m still only 32 and as long as I’ve got the enthusiasm and the will to do things I will continue to play.

‘‘I’ll see how my body is but I think I’ve got a lot longer left in the game than the 18 months left on my current contract.

‘‘Football has a nasty habit of kicking you in the teeth but I would dearly love to finish my career here.

‘‘I’ve got the World Cup to look forward to and then we’ll see what happens next year.

‘‘It’s down to the club but if they want to offer me a new deal then I’m more than willing.’’

Staunton has impressed since an injury to Olof Mellberg gave him his chance in September.

Now he is looking to hold onto his place when Alpay returns from a spell on the sidelines in a fortnight.

Staunton said: ‘‘I’m just grateful to have been given a chance and I think I’ve taken it. Hopefully I can be part of something that’s happening around this place.

‘‘All I needed was a run of games to get my match fitness. Hopefully I’ve made the position my own.’’
