Judge starts summing up in footballers' trial

The judge in the Leeds United footballers' trial has told the jury they have to consider the case against each of the four defendants separately.

Mr Justice Henriques has begun his summing-up of the evidence in the trial of Jonathan Woodgate, Lee Bowyer and two other men at Hull Crown Court.

Woodgate, 21, of Middlesbrough, Bowyer, 24, of Leeds and Paul Clifford and Neale Caveney, both 22 and from Middlesbrough, all deny causing grievous bodily harm with intent. They also deny affray.

The judge told the jury that 21-year-old student Sarfraz Najeib had suffered "the most terrible injuries" in the attack in Leeds.

The judge said the prosecution alleged that each of the four defendants played a part in the attack in January last year.

The incident left the Leeds Metropolitan University student in hospital for eight days with injuries including a broken cheekbone and nose.

The judge told them: "You must consider each count separately and the case for and against each defendant separately on each count.

"That means of course eight separate verdicts will be required by you - two in respect of each defendant."
