Premiership: Fowler arrival 'excites me' - O'Leary

Leeds boss David O'Leary believes Robbie Fowler can fire his side to silverware glory.

Leeds boss David O'Leary believes Robbie Fowler can fire his side to silverware glory.

Fowler is due to complete a £11m move from Liverpool today.

He has already agreed personal terms on a four-and-a-half year contract - believed to be £35,000 a week - and has passed the first part of a stringent medical.

Fowler did not watch Leeds' Worthington Cup fourth-round exit at the hands of Chelsea by 2-0.

But O'Leary, in looking forward to Fowler's arrival, said: "If we can sign this player at the price we have got him for then he will be another quality addition.

"Hopefully if he rediscovers the form he showed around a year to 18 months ago then we will have bought another quality player to add to those we already have here.

"The prospect of Fowler playing for us excites me. Over time, if we can train him and fit him in to our way of playing then he is somebody who can score a lot of goals for us."

The Worthington Cup was a trophy O'Leary had been hoping to win this season, but the defeat was compounded by the loss to injury of Dominic Matteo, Eirik Bakke and Stephen McPhail.

McPhail limped out of Elland Road on crutches and with his right ankle heavily strapped ahead of undergoing x-rays on Thursday.

Matteo also sustained ankle damage and will now have precautionary scans in the morning, ruling him out of Sunday's league clash against Fulham at Craven Cottage.

Bakke, meanwhile, is doubtful after sustaining a knee ligament injury which left O'Leary to remark: "We are a tired team.

"The best side won, but this is our fourth game in 10 days and I have not been able to freshen things up and that has taken its toll."
