Premiership: Taylor gets Lineker rocket

Former Leicester City legend Gary Lineker has slammed the transfer dealings of the club’s previous manager Peter Taylor.

Lineker, who started on the road to glory with England during his days at Filbert Street, believes Taylor made a big mistake in buying non-Premiership players.

And the ex-Tottenham and Barcelona star has also questioned the appointment of the current joint managerial team of Dave Bassett and Micky Adams as ‘‘a bit strange’’.

Lineker, in an interview in the City fanzine ‘The Fox,’ said: ‘‘It is a bit of a worry.

‘‘Things haven’t looked good for a while and suddenly we seem to be a long, long way from where we were under Martin O’Neill.

‘‘I’m sure Peter Taylor is a good guy and is probably a good coach but he made a lot of mistakes in the transfer market.

‘‘The squad is nowhere near as strong as it was. Obviously he took a gamble on buying players from the lower leagues and it back-fired.’’

As for the introduction of the Bassett-Adams combination, Lineker said: ‘‘The appointment seemed a bit strange.

‘‘It was almost as if they weren’t quite ready to gamble on Micky Adams, who has done tremendously well in his career up to now so they brought Dave Bassett in.

‘‘Now it seems a bit like they are waiting for Harry (Bassett) to fail so they can bring Micky in so why not just take the gamble on Micky rather than putting him at number two?

‘‘Maybe it won’t go wrong and Dave can turn it around. If they can get everyone fit, then City have still got some good players and I’m sure a couple of wins would restore confidence.

‘‘City have had an awful start but they have had bad starts before and got over them.’’
