Premiership: Wins for N'castle, Southampton and Spurs

An Alan Shearer penalty was enough to lift Newcastle into third place after a 1-0 win over Derby at St James' Park.

The former England striker scored after Laurent Robert was brought down in the 30th minute. Newcastle and Republic of Ireland goalkeeper Shay Given, who had earlier made a string of top-class saves, made another great effort to push aside Ravanelli’s spot-kick.

Tottenham scraped by West Ham in the London derby at Upton Park when Les Ferdinand claimed the only goal in a 1-0 success. Spurs won it when Gustavo Poyet had his shot turned against the post by Hammers' goalkeeper David James, only for Ferdinand to follow up in the 50th minute.

Southampton moved off the bottom of the table with their first win at their new St Mary's ground. A full house saw Marian Pahars flash a header home from James Beattie's 59th-minute cross to earn a 1-0 win over Charlton.

Fulham had Edwin van der Sar to thank for a 0-0 draw at Bolton in a match between two of the newly-promoted sides at the Reebok Stadium. The Dutch star saved a tremendous effort from Kevin Nolan in the first half in a boring game.

Blackburn extended their good run at Stamford Bridge where they are now unbeaten in nine visits after a 0-0 draw. There were boos for Chelsea manager Claudio Ranieri at the final whistle.

Everton drew for the third time on the trot after a goalless draw at Filbert Street, where Leicester failed to score for the ninth time this season.
