Premiership: North London rivals unite after ugly scenes

Players from both Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur have spoken out against the fans who attacked the Arsenal team bus before and after Saturday’s FA Barclaycard Premiership clash at White Hart Lane.

Tottenham may face an FA charge after emotions ran high on the day Sol Campbell returned to White Hart Lane as an Arsenal player.

Campbell ran a gauntlet of hate during the game - which finished in a 1-1 draw - but it was the events before and after that disturbed Les Ferdinand and Robert Pires.

As the Arsenal coach left White Hart Lane 75 minutes after the final whistle, it came under fire from bottles and glasses.

Spurs striker Ferdinand said: ‘‘It shouldn’t be like that. That’s just not what football is all about.

‘‘It was pretty hostile out there. I suppose it was what everybody expected from the fans - and in that respect they didn’t let anyone down, did they?

‘‘We expected what happened on the pitch - but nobody expected them to chuck stuff at the coach.’’

Pires added: ‘‘The atmosphere was out of order and none of us enjoyed it.

‘‘What happened to Sol wasn’t right. He was hit by a bottle but he was magnificent.

‘‘He used it to psych himself up and came through with flying colours.’’

The Football Association are waiting for more details before deciding whether to charge Tottenham.

Spokesman Paul Newman confirmed: ‘‘We’re awaiting the reports from the match officials and the police.

‘‘But we will be looking at the events which took place in and around the ground.’’
