Premiership: Man Utd supporters look for more control

Shareholders United, the independent Manchester United supporter-shareholder group, will be asking for a greater say in how the club is run at the plc’s annual general meeting today.

SU spokesman Oliver Houston said: ‘‘It is only a matter of time before the fans hold enough shares to make the calls for a place on the board irresistible.

‘‘The club want to convert the 50 million worldwide United fans into ‘customers’ we want to turn them into shareholders.

‘‘It doesn’t take a professor of mathematics to work out that if they all clubbed together in SU’s collective scheme we would control the single largest slice of the club.

‘‘Currently, 75% of the plc shareholders hold 1,000 shares or less. Those 25,000 people are clearly not in it for the money. They, like Shareholders United, care more about their club than their dividends.’’
