Soccer: Mullery backs Spurs revolution
Glenn Hoddle’s Tottenham revolution has been backed by former White Hart Lane favourite Alan Mullery.
Spurs have been gaining admirers up and down the country in recent weeks and have turned on the style on their way to winning their last three matches, scoring nine goals in the process.
Former Spurs skipper Mullery is pleased for his old club and believes Hoddle has brought back the Tottenham tradition of playing entertaining football.
‘‘Glenn knows the traditions of the club, having been there as a player, and is taking those traditions into the way he is coaching the club,’’ said Mullery. ‘‘It is the way he used to play football, basically.’’
Mullery praised four of Hoddle’s signings, who have been the backbone of the club’s recent success.
He said: ‘‘On a short-term basis, Glenn has made some very good signings. Teddy Sheringham and Gus Poyet are out-and-out footballers.
‘‘Dean Richards is a confident centre-half who has improved tremendously over the last couple of years.
‘‘As for Christian Ziege, when he was at Middlesbrough and Liverpool I don’t think he played as often as he would have liked, but now he has got a manager who has given him the confidence to go and play like he did for Germany for many years.
‘‘Glenn has got players with talent, there is no doubt about that, and they are now an experienced side. But there are also one or two good youngsters coming through.’’
