Soccer: Carr out for four months

Republic of Ireland fullback, Stephen Carr, has been ruled out of action for a further four months after undergoing an operation on his knee.

The news will come as a major blow to both his club, Tottenham Hotspurs, and his country. The injury means that Carr will miss Ireland’s remaining World Cup qualifier against Cyprus in two weeks time and could also miss the play-off ties if Ireland qualify for them.

Ireland coach, Mick McCarthy, must now face selection headache because his other right fullback, Gary Kelly, is suspended after being sent-off against Holland earlier this month.

The news comes after the other Irishman playing for Spurs, Gary Doherty, suffered a broken leg in a Worthington Cup game against Torquay last Thursday.
