Hargreaves, born in Canada of British parents, was a surprise inclusion in the Bayern Munich side in Milan.

Then two minutes later Elber got away from his marker, but his header was cleanly taken by Canizares.

The match was becoming a midfield battle with Valencia looking dangerous on the counter attack.

John Carew almost added a second goal three minutes from hafree-kick.

The Norwegian striker’s header was powerfully struck but drifted marginally wide of the post.

Bayern brought off Willy Sagnol at half time and replaced him with the giant Carsten Jancker, who partnered Elber up front.

The German champions drew level in the 50th minute after the third penalty of the night.

Jancker seemed to lean into Amedeo Carboni and the ball struck the Valencia defender’s arm.

Effenberg refused to intimidated by Canizares and sent the keeper the wrong way from the spot.

Hargreaves was not afraid to get stuck in and continually frustrated the dangerous Mendieta.

The 20-year-old Calgary-born star burst forward in the 75th minute, but sent a wild shot into the crowd.

Valencia, so lively early on, were now struggling to penetrate the Bayern defence.

Carew, though, did well to get in a cross from the right, but sub Zlatko Zahovic’s touch let him down and Kahn was able to make the save.

Jancker was proving a threat and almost sealed it in stoppage time with a thunderous shot which went narrowly wide.

Bayern were up against it when Sergio blasted the first penalty over the bar, but Khan gave them hope when he produced a great stop from Zahovic.

Both keepers then produced stunning saves and the shoot-out went into sudden death.

Linke netted his chance and then Khan was the hero as he kept out Pellegrino’s effort to seal the win 5-4.
