Soccer: Menton is new FAI boss

Brendan Menton has been confirmed as the new chief executive of the FAI.

Brendan Menton has been confirmed as the new chief executive of the FAI.

The appointment was rubberstamped at a meeting of the association’s board at a Dublin hotel.

It was widely expected the board members would opt to appoint Mr Menton and not to advertise externally.

He replaces Bernard O’Bryne who resigned after the FAI abandoned the proposed Eircom Park project.

Brendan Menton was one of the most vocal opponents of the stadium plan and has discussed the merits of the project with Taoiseach Bertie Ahern.

He is currently the treasurer of the association and, along with Galway United delegate John Byrne, first voiced serious concerns about the real cost of Eircom Park.
