Soccer: Petit puts return plans on hold

Barcelona midfielder Emmanuel Petit looks set to disappoint a host of clubs hoping to persuade him into returning to the Premiership.

The former Arsenal star has been linked with several clubs in recent weeks but insists his current plans are aimed at staying in Spain.

‘‘There are five or six English clubs interested in me, as well as French and Italian clubs, but I will give Barcelona the priority in my thoughts,’’ Petit told onefootball.com.

‘‘On the condition that I don’t have to live through another such a terrible season.’’

Petit revealed that he has spoken with great friend Patrick Vieira regarding a move back to the Gunners.

‘‘He asked me to go back to London, telling me that Arsenal supporters chanted my name during the last game at Highbury,’’ Petit said.

‘‘I was not angry when I left England I was tired. I was like Patrick Vieira, fed up with finishing second.’’

The Frenchman has failed to make an impact with the Catalan giants since moving from Highbury alongside Marc Overmars, but Petit is hoping the recent chance in coach at the Nou Camp will help his cause.

‘‘Since Charles Rexach replaced Serra Ferrer, I have been playing more and more often in my real position,’’ added Petit.

‘‘We have five League games left to play, as well as the Copa del Rey, and they will definitely matter.’’
