Soccer: Footballers to face retrial

Leeds United's Jonathan Woodgate and Lee Bowyer will face a retrial over an alleged attack on a student.

Woodgate and Bowyer will face a hearing at Hull on October 8, Mr Justice Poole said.

Two of Woodgate's friends Paul Clifford and Neale Caveney will also face a retrial, Hull Crown Court heard.

The nine-week trial was dramatically halted when the jury was discharged following an article in the Sunday Mirror.

Bowyer, 24, of Leeds, and Woodgate, Clifford and Caveney, all 21, and from Middlesbrough, had denied causing grievous bodily harm with intent to Sarfraz Najeib. They also denied affray.

Mr Najeib, 20, of Rotherham, South Yorkshire suffered serious injuries in a street attack in Leeds city centre last year.

His injuries included a broken leg, fractured cheekbone and a bite mark to his right cheek.

He spent eight days in hospital following the attack.
