Heskey and Jari Litmanen get the home side off to a flyer with goals in the first 12 minutes. Battling City hit back through Andrei Kanchelskis but Vladimir Smicer and Markus Babbel make the game safe before Shaun Goater’s late consolation.

Liverpool live on their nerves before disposing of Birkenhead’s Cup kings. Danny Murphy and Michael Owen give the visitors a 2-0 half-time lead but Tranmere hit back through Steve Yates. Steven Gerrard increases the lead but a Robbie Fowler error lets in Wayne Allison to reduce the deficit again. Fowler makes up for his mistake with a late penalty.
