Soccer: Dundee United's losses top a million

Dundee United made a STG£1.2m loss last season.

Dundee United made a STG£1.2m loss last season.

And that was also a period when then-chairman Jim McLean increased his stake in the club.

McLean stepped down after allegedly assaulting a BBC reporter earlier this season, and he offered to sell his shareholding.

From June 1999 to June 2000 he increased their stakeholding from 29% to 41%, including those already controlled by his immediate family.

As yet no disposal of that controlling interest has been completed.

United made a profit on buying and selling of just over £m during that period, the biggest switch being Billy Dodds' £1.3m move to Rangers in December 1999.

The Tannadice club had a turnover of £4.m during that period, some £500,000 less than the previous year.

An operating loss of £2.2m was also recorded, an increase of more than £800,000 on the 1999 figure of £1.3m.

All that added up to an overall loss of £1.2m for the financial year up to June 2000 compared with the 1999 figure of £500,000.

The club increased their bank overdraft from £800,000 to almost £1.5m and owed creditors more than £2.3m.

The accounts will be presented to shareholders at the club's 75th annual meeting on Friday, April 6 at 11.30am.
