More problems for the FAI?

The finance committee of the FAI is meeting on Wednesday morning following weekend newspaper reports of the use of an Association credit card by Chief Executive Bernard O'Byrne.

The announcement comes as the Association prepares to hold another round of talks with the Taoiseach and top ministers about the National Stadium this evening.

The Football Association has been making the headlines for all the wrong reasons in recent weeks.

First, the cost of its own Eircom Park project rocketed by IR£50m, then it was forced into a u-turn on discussions with the Government about the National Stadium and now newspaper reports about use of an Association credit card.

Mr O'Byrne is linking the timing of the reports as deliberate, coming as they do just ahead of this evening’s second meeting with the Government.

He said the issues involved are long settled - nevertheless the FAI Finance Committee has announced this meeting on Wednesday morning.
