Soccer: Aldridge celebrates league success

Tranmere gave manager John Aldridge plenty to smile about as they climbed off the foot of the Division One table with a 2-0 win against fellow strugglers Huddersfield at Prenton Park.

First-half goals by Wayne Allison and Steve Yates were enough to give Rovers victory and leave the Terriers to replace them in bottom spot.

Aldridge said: "We haven't played in the league for while, so it was nice to get the three points.

"In the first half we went about the game in the right way but in the second half we got a bit nervy and gave the ball away a bit too much - but it was a good victory.

"You look at the games since Christmas, and we haven't done badly. We are doing okay and we need six more wins to stay up."

Aldridge also revealed striker Stuart Barlow will be taken off the transfer list after his recent improved performances.

He said: "It's taken seven months to get him to do what I wanted him to do when I brought him here from Wigan.

"My strikers are now scoring goals. Stuart got one last week; Paul (Rideout) got a hat-trick as well, and Wayne has scored one tonight."
