Eriksson calls on Graham

George Graham has revealed that new England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson has been in contact with him.

Eriksson has asked Graham about Sol Campbell and Darren Anderton's form and fitness.

The Swede is set to name his first squad for the friendly against Spain at Villa Park on Friday.

Graham had to confirm to Eriksson that Anderton will not be available for the clash next Wednesday because of an Achilles injury that is likely to sideline the midfielder for three more weeks.

But although the Spurs boss would not divulge details of his conversation with the new England supremo he is certain to have given centre-back Sol Campbell a glowing recommendation.

Tottenham skipper Campbell may also be a candidate for the England captaincy if Eriksson decides against continuing with David Beckham, who took over from the now internationally-retired Tony Adams for the last friendly against Italy.

But Graham said: "The England captaincy was not discussed, but of course I'd expect to see Sol named in the England squad. He's been outstanding in our last few games and for most of the season".

Graham said he was pleasantly surprised to take the call from Eriksson who watched Spurs in a goalless draw at West Ham at the end of last month.

"It's unusual for me to get a call from an England manager," said the Scotsman. "But I think it is a very positive sign that he's contacting club managers to ask about their players. I'm sure I'm not the only one.

"Not many past England managers have called me before when I've been in charge of a club, but this guy is a Swede isn't he. I give him a lot of respect for contacting a Scotsman to talk about England players.

"I go back a way with Eriksson, though. I crossed swords several times with him in European competition when I was at Arsenal and he was at Benfica and then Sampdoria.

"And when I managed Leeds he brought Lazio for a pre-season tournament in Ireland where we drew 0-0.

"It was nice to hear from him again and I hope I was helpful to him. He asked about Darren Anderton and I put him in the picture.

"Unfortunately the boy is out for a few weeks yet and has no chance for the Spain game, but it will be a boost for him to know that the new England manager is thinking about him."
