Soccer: Newcastle strike deal for Quinn

Newcastle confirmed that they have agreed terms with Sheffield United for the transfer of defender Wayne Quinn.

The full-back has played four times for the Magpies during a month's loan at St James's Park.

He also flew out with the rest of Bobby Robson's squad to La Manga in Spain after the 2-0 Premiership defeat at Charlton.

No details of the deal have been released and personal terms will have to be negotiated after Newcastle return from the Continent, but it is understood that the fee will be in the region of £1m.

Speaking after the defeat at the Valley, Robson said: "We've made an offer in principle and I think the offer will be acceptable.

"My opinion is that we should bring him in. He's not a bad player, he's a good lad, he's English, left-footed and he'll only cost us around £1m."

Newcastle chairman Freddy Shepherd and opposite number Derek Dooley have been in discussion for several days over Quinn's future, but it seems likely that he will complete his move to Tyneside later this week.

Former Blades trainee Quinn has been capped by England at B, Under-21 and youth level, but has struggled to make his mark at Bramall Lane under Neil Warnock after recovering from a serious knee injury.
