The 22 National League soccer clubs have advised the Football Association of Ireland to negotiate with the government for the use of the proposed national stadium.

Club representatives have also instructed the FAI to immediately appoint independent technical and financial advisors to review the viability of eircom Park.

They want the proposed stadium to be fully processed by An Bord Pleanala.

The news is a major blow to chief executive Bernard O'Byrne's insistence that the project will go ahead.

Eircom League chairman Michael Hyland said negotiations with the government must begin immediately in order to have a back-up alternative should eircom Park fall through.
