Eircom Park figure to meet Taoiseach

One of the key figures in the Eircom Park controversy has been granted an early meeting with the Taoiseach.

Brendan Menton, the FAI treasurer, requested the meeting with Bertie Ahern as the debate over the £130 million project continues.

Following last Monday's marathon meeting of the leadership of the FAI, there were conflicting views about whether or not it had been agreed Mr Menton should approach Mr Ahern to explore possible links with the National Stadium. Newspaper and radio reports of a possible meeting drew a swift and indignant response from the association. That response was later softened to suggest Mr Menton might approach the Taoiseach in a personal capacity.

The treasurer, who has yet to be convinced about the viability of Eircom Park, has now made his move and Mr Ahern's office has confirmed a meeting will take place early next week. Meanwhile, a four-man FAI team continues contacts with possible new investors and are due to present their proposals the following week.
