While the League of Ireland has embraced Friday night football for the past decade, this week’s top-flight showdown between Manchester United and Southampton is the first to be played in Sky Sports’ regular Friday night slot as part of its new deal with England’s Premier League.

Of course football has traditionally been played on Good Friday, and its history stretches back beyond the rather killjoy implementation of association rules.
