As soon as the 20-year-old met new Rovers’ boss Owen Coyle, he was sold on the deal.

He said: “I’m absolutely delighted and I cannot wait to get started. I know even when the fixtures came out the other day, I was looking at them and you get excited and you get a little tingle in your stomach.

“I’ve had that feeling since I spoke to Owen and since he asked me to come and play.

“Once I spoke to him and heard where I was going to play and the plans he had for this season, and his enthusiasm for the season going forward, it was a no-brainer.”

Coyle thinks he has sealed a coup with the deal. “Jack is a player I’ve known for years, from when he came over from Dublin as a young kid. I’ve watched his progression for years through the Manchester City youth teams, culminating in last year.

“He went to the Eredivisie in Holland, 19 years of age, to Cambuur, which is not a fashionable side and fighting at the bottom end of the table.

“This kid, he stepped in and controlled games at 19 years of age, against Ajax, Feyenoord, against top, top teams.

“This is a wonderful young player who can only get better, and who Manchester City have very high hopes for.

“I think he’s ready to step into the Championship and show his quality. I’ll be very excited to work with him.”
