Avondale claim league title from UCC in style

An explosive atmosphere today at Avondale Park with no love lost between the Dale and the Students, since UCC beat Avondale to the league in what some would say controversial circumstances in 2015.

Avondale claim league title from UCC in style

There was certainly no love lost between the two sides, as Dave Warren led his troops into action against Noel Healy's students knowing a draw was enough for the Dale to take the league title from the current champions.

With UCC controlling the early possession, Avondale weathered the early storm and created two half chances, with Roy Long looking dangerous after coming on for his injured brother, Danny.

Some late pressure for Avondale led to a succession of corners but the Blues failed to capitalise. UCC almost stole the lead at 39 minutes when Sean McGlaghlin had a clear header only to be denied by the feet of the ever reliable O Leary.

Avondale made the breakthrough right on half time when a long throw from Cummerford was headed home by the dangerous Long to give the home side a half time lead.

The second half started off with both teams flying into tackles in a tremendous opening five minutes - with referee Keith Callnan and his assistants controlling the action calmly. The game sprang back to life at 56 minutes with a great jinking run on the Avondale right from Gary Cummerford, which led to Roy Long blasting in from close range for his second goal of the evening.

College continued to press, with the midfield showing their class, but the experience of Mulconroy and Lougheed in the Dale back four kept the students at bay.

A penalty at 79 minutes was converted by Gary Cummerford to give Avondale a comfortable lead going into the last 10 minutes, however UCC can only be commended for the effort and spirit they continued to show.

The final 10 minutes were played out in a comfortable pattern as Avondale claimed the league title in style in front of their home support.

Final Score: Avondale Utd 3-0 UCC
