Shane Duggan delivers for Limerick

Runaway First Division leaders Limerick met their toughest test of the campaign last night and, despite finishing with 10 men, prevailed 2-1 against UCD.

Shane Duggan delivers for Limerick

Captain Shane Duggan bagged both goals at the Belfield Bowl, either side of Ryan Swan’s equaliser, to extend their unblemished run to eight games.

Breaking the record number of consecutive wins was hard work for Martin Russell’s team against a side who were also relegated last year but the Munster men shaded an eventful tie.

Aaron Green had rattled the crossbar before Duggan fired in the opener on 17 minutes.

Swan replied with three minutes of the half remaining by sweeping in a cross from Dylan Watts.

The winner was a beauty, Duggan’s long-range shot four minutes after the restart finding the net, but Shane Tracy then saw his penalty saved by Conor O’Donnell, who came on after UCD stopper Niall Corbett was sent off on 55 minutes.

The decision by Robbie Williams to haul down Swan earned a red card but also prevented a great chance for the Students to level again.

Elsewhere, Waterford United couldn’t give outgoing benefactor John O’Sullivan a farewell win at the RSC as they fell to a 2-1 defeat against Drogheda United.

Sean Brennan fired Drogs into an early lead but Aaron O’Connor brought the hosts level on 27 minutes. Chances came the way of both sides but Aaron Molloy took his on 81 minutes to hand Drogheda a first win of the campaign.

Athlone went level with Waterford on seven points by beating basement side Cabinteely 3-1, thanks to Marco Chindea’s hat-trick. Shane Boyle had earlier put Cabo ahead.
