The Swiss went in front from the penalty spot with the final action of the half when Dara O’Shea brought down Giotto Morandi and Nedim Bajrami sent Paul Martin the wrong way from the kick.

Tom Mohan’s men drew level on 56 minutes when Colm Walsh O’Loghlen whipped in a right-wing corner that fell into the path of Dara O’Shea who scrambled home.

Colm Walsh O’Loghlen missed a great chance to put the Irish in front four minutes before the sound of the final whistle when he got on the end of a left-wing Rian O’Sullivan cross but the winger blazed wide.

Ireland’s Thomas Byrne was sent off in injury time for a second yellow card.
