Cork City manager John Caulfield has expressed his delight at receiving the backing of the club with a new two-year contract.

“I came in two years ago to turn the club around and get us back up near the top, so I am delighted that the board has backed me,” he said.

“They have seen the work that has been done. I think we are on the right track and I am thrilled that they have backed me to lead the club for another two years.”

Caulfield was appointed after the 2013 season, coming close to claiming the league title in his first season in senior management, with City only missing out on the final day away to Dundalk.

And while it looks like the club will again have to play second-fiddle in the league to the defending champions, City’s continued good form over the course of Caulfield’s second season in charge means they can still look forward to contesting an FAI Cup semi-final against Bray Wanderers this Sunday.

Outlining his longer term vision for the club, Caulfield said yesterday: “From my point of view, we want to drive on and see can we win trophies, can we get into Europe every year, can we progress in Europe? We have had two phenomenal seasons and this season is not over yet. Next season, I need to make the team better, I need a stronger squad. People know my passion for this club, firstly as a player, then as a supporter and now as manager. It has been a fantastic experience for me so far and I just hope that I can drive the club on more in the next two years.”

Pat Lyons, the chairman of FORAS and Cork City FC welcomed Caulfield’s deal. “These are exciting times for Cork City Football Club, both on and off the pitch, and I believe that, in John, we have a manager who will continue to build what he has already achieved.”
