Cobh Ramblers on top against Waterford United in Munster derby
On the back of last week’s victory over Cabinteely, Stephen Henderson’s side sped into a three-goal lead after only 65 minutes before the basement battlers replied in stoppage time through Shane Mackey.
Chances were traded during the first half hour, with Daniel Pender going close for the hosts while the Rams’ Stephen Kenny blazed over at the other end.
Two goals in the final four minutes of the half turned the tie on its head. Kenny latched onto a superb Stephen Christopher pass to bury the opener before the provider scored himself from a long-distance free-kick.
Just three minutes after Cobh goalkeeper Eoghan Daly denied Mark Walsh’s 62nd-minute header, the Rams extended their lead when Ryan Goldsmith’s cross-shot deceived Blues’ goalkeeper Robert Birdsall. Mackey pulled one back by converting Dean Reid’s right-wing cross.
Elsewhere, UCD maintained their charge back into title contention by inflicting a 3-1 defeat on Dublin southside rivals Cabinteely.
Although Cabo soared into a 12th-minute lead through a penalty from Sodiq Oguntola, the Students weren’t long in mounting a comeback as captain Robbie Benson equalised five minutes later. Jamie Doyle scored on the hour to put UCD 2-1 up before defender Tomas Boyle sealed victory with another a minute from the end.
The top three all drew blanks. Leaders Finn Harps were held scoreless by Athlone Town, while there were no goals either at Tolka Park as the fixture between the second and third placed sides, Wexford Youths and Shelbourne, produced no goals.
