Ronnie Whelan reveals Liverpool fears

Ronnie Whelan believes Liverpool must hit the ground running this season in their quest for silverware and a return to Champions League football.

Ronnie Whelan reveals Liverpool fears

Whelan, along with Jason McAteer and Phil Babb, were among a Liverpool Legends side which played a friendly against Drinagh Rangers in West Cork on Saturday.

Instrumental in bringing the famous Reds to Drinagh, Whelan fears his old club face a difficult challenge considering the number of players that have left Anfield in the last two years.

“Liverpool certainly have a lot stronger squad than they did this time last year and that’s vital, heading into such a massive season,” said Whelan. “Brendan Rodgers has brought in seasoned professionals who we know can deliver at Premier League level. The only worry is that so many have come in over the past two years that it is going to be very difficult to mould them into a proper team.

“You look at how Tottenham struggled when they sold Gareth Bale and brought in a lot of players. No doubt it is a big season for Brendan and he needs to get results early on as the fans and owners are unlikely to be happy if Liverpool are hovering outside the Champions League places come Christmas, especially with the money that has been spent.”

McAteer insists Liverpool spent well during the transfer window but knows the importance of early victories.

“He’s [Rodgers] brought some real quality into the first team and I’ve been impressed with James Milner and also with the young lad Antonio Gomes, who I think will fit into Liverpool’s defence.

“Obviously Clyne, Firmino, and Benteke’s arrivals are going to be crucial but it is hugely important that Liverpool hit the ground running as soon as the season starts and get some points on the board as quickly as possible.”

Phil Babb shares that viewpoint. “This is a massive year for Brendan and the club itself as we need to do a lot better than last season.” said Babb.
