Ross Gaynor gets Cork City going

Waterford United 0 Cork City 2: Cork City have booked their place in the third round of the EA Sports League Cup with a win in the Munster Derby clash with Waterford United at the RSC yesterday.

Following a scoreless first-half that saw Blues keeper Robert Birdsall make fine saves to deny Gavan Holohan and Danny Morrissey, Cork went in front on 47 minutes from the penalty spot when Birdsall brought down Mark O’Sullivan. The Blues keeper guessed right, but couldn’t keep Ross Gaynor’s effort out.

After picking up an early card for a foul on Boyle, Cork’s Gavan Holohan was sent off on 65 minutes following another foul on Thomas Croke, but it didn’t stop the visitors doubling their lead. The second arrived on 78 mins when a fine through ball from Kieran Djilali saw Robert Lehane time his run to perfection and the half-time substitute slipped the ball past Birdsall.
