McClean tackle leaves Milik out for a month
Both Milik and the Polish team doctor described the challenge from the Ireland substitute during Sunday’s 1-1 draw as “scary”.
McClean left the Ajax attacker in a heap by haring into a 50/50 tackle for what was his first involvement having just been introduced as a substitute on 68 minutes.
With Poland ahead at the time, the full-blooded challenged drew a rapturous response from the packed crowd just as Ireland needed a lift.
And, while the 21-year-old played on for another 16 minutes, the knee injury he sustained leaves him facing a spell on the sidelines just weeks after recovering from a different injury.
“Arek could be out for up to four weeks,” said Poland doctor Jacek Jaroszewski. “It was a scary challenge and he’s hurt his knee ligaments. He was lucky that it wasn’t even worse.”
