Ten-man Belgium held on to beat Israel 1-0 in a European Championship qualifier last night after Marouane Fellaini scored an early goal and captain Vincent Kompany was sent off midway through the second half.

Fellaini scored from close range in the ninth minute to earn a victory that put the Belgians top of Group B, ahead of Wales on goal difference.

But the visitors were down to 10 men in the 64th minute after Kompany picked up his second yellow card of the match. Israel are now third in the group, two points further back.
