The Waterford native trotted into Ireland’s first preparatory session of the week yesterday boasting the best strike record this season of any squad member, his 23 goals keeping Ipswich Town firmly in the Championship play-off zone.

International football hasn’t been so kind for Murphy, albeit only two of his 14 caps have been granted in the starting line-up, but with the 32-year-old entering the twilight of his career, what better way to get off the mark in front of a packed Aviva Stadium in the most significant tie of the five qualifiers thus far.
