Damien Comolli confirms Tottenham approach to Mourinho in ’07

Damien Comolli has admitted Tottenham made an approach to appoint Jose Mourinho as coach after he left Chelsea back in 2007 — but disputed that the Portuguese ruled out moving to White Hart Lane because, as he claimed, "I love Chelsea supporters too much".

Comolli was sporting director of Tottenham at the time Mourinho fell out with owner Roman Abramovich and they parted ways. The Frenchman wanted to move quickly to see if he was available.

“It’s true when Jose says he was contacted by Spurs after he left Chelsea,” Comolli admitted.

“The day we heard he was leaving Chelsea, I spoke to our chairman about the situation and we agreed this was an opportunity that was too big to be missed. This was a guy who could come in and change everything.

“It was agreed I would get in touch, so I contacted his agent Jorge Mendes — who of course now is famous but in those days was less so — and I sounded him out to see if it would be a ~possibility.

“Contrary to what Jose has been implying, we felt there was a genuine interest but Chelsea made sure he couldn’t join another English club by putting in certain clauses into his departure package, so in the end it didn’t happen.”

Mourinho admitted his Chelsea contract forbade him from working for another English team for two years after his departure. Instead, Mourinho moved to Italy where he helped Inter Milan to win the Champions League.
