Caulfield confident City strong enough for title push

Cork City manager John Caulfield insists there is no need for massive reinforcements to the squad in the summer transfer window.

City, second in the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division, resume action this evening against Limerick at Turner’s Cross.

While Josh O’Shea has joined from UCC and another signing – believed to be UCD’s Cillian Morrison – is lined up, Caulfield is not looking for many new players.

“We have agreed already with someone to come in,” he said, “another attacking player who will be announced after the weekend, which is good.

“There’s another possible one who could come into the panel, but the situation, and everybody has to be careful about it, is that we’re second in the table for a reason.

“The guys in the club have worked really hard and have shown a fantastic attitude, there’s a great spirit among the players.

“While the transfer window is open and Josh O’Shea has come in and we have another one agreed, really we’re not going to bring two or three [more] players.

“I don’t see a lot of remedial work to be done, I see a lot of guys working really hard.

“I felt we needed to strengthen the squad and I think we’ve done that,” he said.

Two weeks ago, City beat Shamrock Rovers for the second time this season.

As to whether that result has made people outside Cork sit up and take notice of them, Caulfield is unperturbed.

“I don’t really care about it,” he said, “maybe that’s because I’m a lot older and a lot wiser than I was when I first went into management.

“I was much more of a hothead and wanting my teams to get the credit I felt they deserved, when they didn’t I’d get upset.

“It doesn’t bother me now, I’ve come to realise it’s all about winning trophies and if you’re doing that nothing else matters.

“You want to be there at the end of the season and that’s where your reward is.

“We’re a very strong, local team with fantastic support, the fans sense that these guys want to do well for Cork.

“I keep saying to the lads not to worry about anything else.”
