Meyler says Bruce was between heaven and Hull

David Meyler has admitted Hull City nearly gave manager Steve Bruce a heart attack in Sunday’s topsy-turvy FA Cup semi-final before the Cork man’s goal put the icing on the cake of a 5-3 win over Sheffield United.

“It was nice to score but, to be honest, I think we’re all a little bit disappointed with how we played in the first half more than anything else,” said Meyler. “We weren’t good enough and we nearly let the game get away from us. We made the changes and picked ourselves up after the break. Matty Fryatt scored five minutes in and then the big man (Tom Huddlestone) scored as well with a terrific finish. Then Quinny (Stephen Quinn) got involved and then I had an opportunity thanks to a great pass from Elmohamady and we’re delighted to be in the FA Cup final. We were 1-0 down, then 1-1, then 2-1 down 30 seconds later. Then we get to 4-2 up, 4-3 and then finally 5-3.

“The manager is always saying that we’ll give him a heart attack and we nearly gave it to him on Sunday, but our class shone through in the end.

“I was running on empty, I worked my backside off, but we got through.. We’ve got an FA Cup final to look forward to and five games in the league. Let’s make it a fantastic season.”

Meyler’s fellow Irish international midfielder Stephen Quinn has admitted that his Wembley goalscoring heroics left him with mixed feelings.

While elated to be in the final, the fact that the Dubliner’s goal was against his former club Sheffield United accounted for his muted celebrations.

Quinn said: “The question was posed to me during the week would I celebrate if I scored and I said ‘no’.

“I have too much respect for a big club that helped me to grow as a player and looked after me and my family for a number of years. It just had to happen, didn’t it really? It was written in the stars so there are mixed emotions.

“But I am happy to score a goal at Wembley and get to the final. I think that we deserved it. We have more than held our own in the Premier League. We have had some good results and this could turn out to be a tremendous year if we finish it strong.”
