The win, in the first round of the EA Sports League Cup at the RSC last night, came thanks to first-half goals from Paddy Barrett and Shaun Corcoran.
Avondale United shocked the home side when they took the lead on nine minutes, when Dave Warren back-heeled the ball into the path of Graham McCarthy, and he beat keeper Kevin Burns with a neat left-footed finish from 10 yards.
The lead lasted less than two minutes, though. Waterford were awarded a free kick on the right channel and Stephen Kenny’s cross found the head of central defender Barrett, who planted an unstoppable header past Jason Green.
Waterford struck the front on 34 minutes with a fine goal as Kynan Rocks started a move to set up Philip Drohan, who laid the ball into the path of Shaun Corcoran. Corcoran took the ball in his stride to find the bottom left corner of the net with a crisp left-footed drive from 25 yards.
Conor Coad, Willie John Kiely and Kynan Rocks missed chances to increase the Blues lead in the second half before the Cork side had Ray Long sent off in injury time following a challenge on Paddy Barrett.
