Keane feeling ‘100 times better’

Republic of Ireland captain Robbie Keane has given manager Martin O’Neill a major boost after revealing he feels “100 times better” than he did.

Keane has been stepping up his comeback at LA Galaxy following surgery on both of his Achilles in the hope of being fit to play for Ireland in the friendly against Serbia on March 5.

He said: “I feel 100 times better. Just to wake up, walk properly and to start practice without any pain or taking 40 minutes to really get going, it feels unbelievable.

“It’s been a good week of training so far. I’ve had to be clever and stay on the recovery program that I was on, and I think that by doing that I’ll be stronger as the season goes on.”

LA coach Bruce Arena has taken a deliberate softly, softly approach with Keane and he said: “He’s getting there.

“He’s going to need some time, but it is important that we start getting him some minutes in the coming weeks.

“We’re hopeful that he’ll be ready for the opening game.”

LA Galaxy open their MLS campaign against Real Salt Lake on March 8.
