Steve Staunton has claimed he achieved his goals during his ill-fated reign as Republic of Ireland manager.

Staunton oversaw a series of disastrous results during his 21-month reign as Ireland boss, with the low point a 5-2 defeat to Cyprus in a European Championship qualifier in October 2006.

Staunton was 36 when he was named Ireland boss and won just six of his 17 games in charge.
